The 23 reservoirs managed by the Provincial Delegation of the National Institute of Hydraulic Resources (INRH) in Las Tunas are at 48 percent of their volume, so they could be benefited if Hurricane Elsa drops its rains in this region.
Las Tunas, Cuba.- With a total filling capacity of 350 million 915 thousand cubic meters of water, the local reservoirs barely accumulate just over 167 million cubic meters, according to Mirtha García Rojas, INRH delegate in the territory.
The municipality of Amancio, where the Derivadora Sevilla dam is at 99 percent has the most worrying situation; meanwhile, there is much hope in the rest of the province, especially in Jobabo, with very tense scenarios in “El Lavado” and “Las Lajas.”
The same occurs in "Jesús Menéndez" and Puerto Padre, in the northern region, with 29 and 37 percent of their possibilities, respectively. The Manatí, Las Tunas, Majibacoa, and "Colombia" reservoirs can receive runs off from nearby areas.
INRH specialists maintain constant monitoring of the fifty rain gauges available in the territory and the main bodies of water, mainly those that are upstream of communities and economic objectives of significant importance.
Last June, the province closed with an accumulated average of 143 millimeters of rain, a historical value of 157, so the rainfall associated with Hurricane Elsa is expected as a possible solution to the extensive drought that usually characterizes this region.
