10th Congress of the University Students Federation (FEU)

The 10th Congress of the University Student Federation (FEU) took its session to the Mexico neighborhood. The appointment resembled its people, its youth and childhood; perhaps due to the premise that each of these spaces has the essence of what is lived in the settlements, of how the youngest see their environment, of how much they contribute to it and, on the contrary, how much the community accompanies its daughters and sons on the way to grow up.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- FEU rises and dreams and, as the poet would say, feeds, to walk, on utopia. This is what Karla Santana, the national president of the organization, considered. After 100 years and nine congresses, university students are called to a new conclave with the imperative that the population rediscovers the potential to self-manage their own paths and achieve cultural transformation.

"We trust that the success of the country is in our neighborhoods," concluded the young woman who had recently shared with the children the reading of the poem Los zapaticos de rosa (Rose slippers).

Precisely, thanks to the José Martí Youth Movement (MJM) and Cuba in My Backpack Project, “the man from The Golden Age” arrived at this site, with necessary readings, which on a neighbor's patio are complemented with volleyball, basketball, soccer, spin… Of those collective adventures and with a mischievous smile, the restless Yosiel told; while Rosalí Alejandra timidly shared her achievements in swimming, already with nine medals.

Alcides Vicente Morales Batista, the delegate of this District, the number 13 of Popular Council 1, was the voice of his neighbors to signify what has been achieved, how much remains to be done and to thank the university students and inhabitants who have provided time and will for the common good.

From that sense of utility that inhabits us and that adults bequeath to the youngsters, the professor of Physical Culture Luis Alejandro Aguilera Lora spoke, one of the many who walked those streets as part of the support to the social transformation of communities like "México," Las Petrocasas, Indaya, and others.

With debates of this nature, the university students of Las Tunas have reached several communities; the exchanges have been different in each of them and, in turn, have had common points. This synergy is not new; it has its antecedents in the brigades and the faculties, in the case of the University of Las Tunas; while the Medical Sciences University has already held meetings in each classroom and the student residence.

After two years of the pandemic that have served as a space for student articulation in the most diverse settlements, the FEU centenary breathes new life and represents a tremendous challenge. Justice and tribute are paid to the founding generation on a daily basis, and it is not easy to reach the height of those who bequeathed us the commitment to love and do for Cuba. To that we have to go every day, to what is born, to what is founded; just as it happened in the "México," where the Congress ended at the rhythm of tradition.
