Las Tunas, Cuba.- During the analysis conducted in one of the working sessions of the Provincial Administration Council, it was said that every year the amount of waste produced in this eastern territory increases, which in 2017 amounted to more than 8,380 tons.
A report prepared by the Territorial Delegation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment, showed 87 priority polluting sources, located mainly in the municipalities of Puerto Padre and Las Tunas. Similarly, the Sugar Company, Public Health, Agriculture (pork production), the Food Industry (Meat Company) and the Dairy Products Company are among the entities that report the highest incidence in this regard.
However, 80 percent of the pollution that is poured into the environment of Las Tunas is produced by the population settlements, as a result of insufficient infrastructure for treatment actions and social indiscipline.
According to this report, the lack of operational manuals, the lack of training and the non-compliance of maintenance programs influence the occurrence of technological indiscipline that prevent a better efficiency of the existing equipment.
In the analyzes carried out in the Council of the Provincial Administration there was a coincidence in which the investments demanded by the solutions to this problem are millionaires (in the Antonio Guiteras sugar mill, in Puerto Padre, at least 10 million pesos would be needed). However, good practices and projects can be implemented, and small-scale investment processes begin to promote change.
In this regard, they reported that in 2018 the waste treatment system of the Guillermo Domínguez hospital, in the so-called Villa Azul and one of the main polluting centers of the Puerto Padre's bay, should be completed. Until 2019, it will have to wait for another one of the sources of pollution, the Geronimo Astier meat combine, which will also be added an installation of this type.
Other entities undertake, although with a delay, investments oriented to support sanitation, as the case of the projects of sewage networks and waste treatment promoted by the Provincial Delegation of Hydraulic Resources in several towns, and the program of construction of biodigesters of the Ministry of Agriculture and the Swine Company, whose figure for this year amounts to 80.
Due to its complexity, the most difficult scenario is seen in the sugar industry, although they envisage constructive actions in the Colombia sugar mill.
Pollution is currently one of the main environmental problems of Las Tunas, whose impact is perceived not only in the loss of biological diversity due to the destruction of the habitat, but also in the quality of life of the population (increase in chronic diseases and epidemics) and the intensification of processes such as climate change and soil degradation.
