In the face of foreign aggression: Patria o Muerte!

In one of the saddest days of the 60s of the last century in Cuba, just at the farewell to mourning after the explosion of La Coubre French freighter, a virile Fidel Castro said, for the first time, that this is a people of "Patria o Muerte" (Fatherland or Death). Today, 61 years have passed, and that dilemma - turned slogan - continues to be empowered in the people.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- For some calendars, it has been intertwined with other slogans because also "We are continuity", "We will live and win", we learned to walk " Ever onward to victory " and there is "Cuba alive", but, undoubtedly, the "Fatherland or Death" refers us to Fidel and the enormous force with which, from that phrase, he always told the people how hard, how accurate and even, thanks to his vision of understanding what was around a corner in the world, what was to come.

Thus, most of his speeches to the Cubans ended; some long and others very long, with that virtue of a born orator that accompanied him, and carried, before the sentence that we knew would mark his last words, solid and intertwined ideas that invited us to reflection.

Today we are still here and, why not; also of "Fatherland or Death." Teams of young people stand out in food production, active research, and in diverse tasks of all calibers. We astonish the universe because, in the midst of colossal problems, Cuba already has five vaccine candidates against COVID-19 and is also announcing that they are for everyone, from San Antonio Cape to Maisí Point.

Growing up in the face of the worst, smiling beyond fear and shortages also make us a people of "Fatherland or Death;" a lucid sentence that was born on a day of extreme pain and still finds itself among the best of this country.
