Türkiye prevents entry of warships or nuclear weapons carriers to the Black Sea.

Türkiye will reject any US request to deploy nuclear submarines in the Black Sea, according to expert Hakan Erkiner, who made the statement today.

Ankara.- The international law analyst stated that the Montreux Convention gives Ankara the power to restrict the transit of military vessels.

He stressed that the agreement only allows temporary entry to Turkish ports.

The United States must ask permission from Turkey, but the Convention prohibits the permanent presence of atomic submarines, Erkiner told a Turkish newspaper.

The Eurasian nation strictly adheres to the 1936 treaty, which regulates passage through the Straits of the Bosphorus and Dardanelles.

Since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, Ankara has closed off access to warships from non-riparian nations.

The Turkish position seeks to avoid rising tensions in the region, the academic recalled.

This rule prevents the entry of warships or nuclear weapons carriers without defined deadlines.

According to Erkiner, his government will not accept the presence of these US units near Russia.

He stressed that the measure would protect the strategic balance.

Türkiye maintains its neutrality in the conflict and exercises its rights as guardian of the straits, concluded the expert. (PL)
