CELAC's support for Puerto Rico's decolonization comes at a time when the island rejects statehood as an attempt to perpetuate its colonization. In Puerto Rico, pro-independence organizations welcomed the resolution in support of Puerto Rico's decolonization adopted last week by the 6th Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in Mexico, said Edwin González, Puerto Rican delegate in Cuba.

Havana, Cuba.- According to González, the support of CELAC is very important for the independence cause of Puerto Rico and highlighted, in this sense, the unity and consensus of the leaders at the summit in Mexico on the Latin American and Caribbean character of Puerto Rico.

The representative of the independence movements in Cuba pointed out the fact that the CELAC recognized the efforts of the Decolonization Committee of the United Nations (UN) on Puerto Rico, which was defined by the regional body as a matter of high interest.

González stressed that, although Puerto Rico was largely absent from the summit, its cause was very well represented and defended by most of the leaders. And he thanked the presidents of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, among others, for their solidarity.

During his intervention in the high-level segment of the 76th UN General Assembly on Thursday, President Díaz-Canel referred to the decolonization of Puerto Rico as a pending issue in the region.

The CELAC Special Declaration expressed that the end of colonialism and the self-determination and independence of Puerto Rico are nonrenounceable tasks.

Edwin González said that the pronouncements of CELAC, in this and previous summits, stimulate the independentists of his country to continue fighting for their self-determination and sovereignty.

Some of these pro-independence organizations and parties held two weeks ago, shortly before the CELAC summit, the march "No to statehood, Yes to decolonization" against a change in the status of the island concerning the United States, in the context of the anniversary of the independence Cry of Lares, on September 23, 1868.
