For more than a month, the Las Tunas hotel has taken care of the child population from 1 to 5 years of age, positive for COVID-19, a wise idea that shows the priority that the local government gives to children.
Las Tunas, Cuba.- So far, more than 700 children have been hospitalized at the tourist facility, which has become an extension of the Mártires de Las Tunas pediatric hospital.
Low-risk patients, without any decompensated chronic ailment (asthma, kidney disease ...) are assisted there. Today, 175 beds are available and there is the possibility of reaching 200 capacities in the two five-floor towers of the facility.
The medical team is made up of pediatricians, specialists in Comprehensive General Medicine and Internal Medicine, and the Nursing staff; together with the service workers (waitresses, midwives...), who support and guarantee the quality of care for minors.
Family members that besides being companions are positive to the antigen test receive the corresponding medications, according to the treatment protocols.
Pediatrician René Juan Figueredo Escrib said that since the opening of the center, in early September, they have successfully fulfilled the honorable mission. So far, he said, children have evolved without complications, and "we have the resources, drugs, and workforce to ensure benefits."
It is not the first time that the Las Tunas Hotel group has taken a step forward in this battle against the pandemic; before, it welcomed those who were leaving work in the red zone. Now, they renew commitments and effort, knowing how important this work is to overcome the pandemic.
In the province of Las Tunas, care for pediatric patients positive for COVID-19 is prioritized. Five thousand 507 children under 18 have been diagnosed here, among them 631 nursing babies and 51 newborns.
Currently, 487 cases remain active (75 admitted to the hotel), which receive careful assistance in the different facilities enabled for this purpose.
