The parenteral immunoregulator is recognized for the ability to increase the production of the body's defense cells

The first elderly from Las Tunas who were given Biomodulin T has completed the treatment scheme with the drug, conceived among the first-line protocols to face the COVID-19 in the country.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- These are 83 grandparents with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, interned in social institutions, explained Dr. Marisbelis González Rodríguez, head of the Department of Care for the Elderly at the Provincial Directorate of Health.

The expert said the parenteral immunoregulator, recognized for the ability to increase the production of the body's defense cells, is used in Las Tunas in the nine nursing homes and there is the necessary assurance to guarantee its administration twice for six weeks to the more than 400 older adults in those institutions.

González Rodríguez pointed out that the nine residing in the two psycho-pedagogical medical centers of the province, as well as 33 elderly patients in the Clodomira Acosta Ferrales psychiatric hospital, receive Biomodulin T.

She highlighted the properties of this drug registered in Cuba since 1994 and used primarily in the treatment of repeated respiratory infections in people over 60 years of age, with excellent efficacy and safety results due to its positive effects in the immune system.

Dr. Marisbelis González Rodríguez explained that Biomodulin T is administered intramuscularly and intravenously, after having the person's consent. In the case of mental disability, the authorization of a relative or legal guardian of the older adult is requested.

Previously, in Las Tunas, all the admitted in the nursing homes received PrevengHo-Vir, a homeopathic complex recommended to combat acute respiratory diseases and distributed on the Island as part of prophylactic actions against the new coronavirus.

Other sanitary measures to prevent the spread of SARS-CoV-2 include the placing of sanitary barriers at the entrance of the caring institutions, the modification of the work schedule in order to reduce the mobility of Health personnel and the existence of an area to isolate any patient with respiratory symptoms and their subsequent evaluation.

The suspension of the grandparents' exits and the entry of the semi-boarding to whom food is brought to their homes through a system of containers, also integrate the actions to guarantee the safety of this age group.

Differentiated care for the elderly is a priority in Las Tunas, especially because about 20 percent of the local population has more than 60 years and this is the most vulnerable age group to the COVID-19.
