Yandi Licea

Many young people are at the center of the fight against COVID-19 in Las Tunas and do not always turn out to be doctors, epidemiologists, or the rest of the health personnel who have grown our souls so much in these hard months.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Many of them are young people from the communities. And they remain there, very close to their homes and the neighborhood that has sheltered them for years at dawn. They know in detail their verdicts and that is a strength; they walk their corners, they know the undisciplined, the points of greatest influx of people usually and have deep knowledge of those who live alone and how to be useful.

Among them is Yandy Licea. He lives in the Casa Piedra neighborhood of this city and is part of a Contingent of Popular Support that has disrupted his daily routines. Now he spends a special time of the day walking around the market, he knows that it is the epicenter of many encounters and, therefore, he remains alert.

The same participates in the distribution of food to the most vulnerable, assists them so that they do not have to leave home and, at times, explains more than once, because “it is very difficult to make some grandparents understand that they cannot go to the bank because of their pensions or do other things. They have to trust us.”

His two young children are protected at home. He arrives at them exhausted when the day already escapes and hears of the antics of the day and the efforts of his wife, Lysandra, to keep them happy despite the fact that they cannot go anywhere; and every sunrise, for her, is also exhausting and brave.

He is one of the many hard-working and determined young people who are on the streets of Cuba right now, doing their part of the duty, without fanfare so that we all emerge victoriously.
