Having a Molecular Biology Laboratory allows faster and more accurate diagnoses

The province of Las Tunas confirms more than 950 positive cases to COVID-19, in which more than a third of the statistics correspond to autochthonous patients.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- “During the last three months, the pandemic Las Tunas has behaved in a perhaps atypical way. A significant number of symptomatic patients have appeared that have increased transmission in the territory. For this reason, the incidence rate in the province increases during these months.

"In the way of classifying patients, both symptomatic and asymptomatic, we work on some classifications, among them, the scenarios of patient contacts of people confirmed as ill. We are averaging 13 contacts and three suspects for each confirmed case. This is a novel element, which in another moment of the pandemic we had not evaluated this way,” Dr. Viviana Gutiérrez Rodríguez, provincial director of Public Health, pointed out.

In the territory, the hospital, isolation, and surveillance capacities continue to be expanded for the treatment of people and the timely control of the detected outbreaks.

“There are elements of Public Health worked in each of the foci that are generated in the community, which are approached in a very comprehensive way, which allows the cutting of transmission chains. This has been an extremely important aspect so that Las Tunas has been able to maintain sustained work during the epidemic,” the directive added.

She also said that in the territory the decision was made to have the Guillermo Domínguez General Teaching Hospital, "as a highly complex center for the care of patients with COVID-19, where suspects with associated comorbidities will be admitted."

The provincial director of Public Health pondered that having a Molecular Biology Laboratory allows faster and more accurate diagnoses.

Although reports in pediatric ages are not the most frequent, the number of positives under 18 years of age has grown in recent months.

"The Temporary Working Group in the province, with its epidemic prevention and control plan, has designed an instrument that allows us to work on health problems in a comprehensive and intersectoral manner during this stage," she said.
