Faced with limited import access, Cuba's food industry is presently creating programs to boost domestic output.

Havana, Cuba.- There are potentials to extend productions, lower raw material costs, and implement alternative technologies, said the Food Industry Minister Manuel Sobrino.

Sobrino explained to deputies attending the National Assembly of People’s Power (ANPP) meeting that favoring domestic production initiatives will be one of the top priorities for 2023 while adding that associated programs such as aquaculture, are also implemented.

Plus, Sobrino stressed that authorities are progressing in investments, mainly for the opening of new production lines and the technological reconversion of other existing ones.

According to a report, food production in 2022 did not grow concerning the previous year, due to non-compliance in raw material delivery, financial and contracting plights, as well as energy limitations.

Cuba annually imports over $2 billion of food, accounting for 80% of the demand of 11 million inhabitants. (PL)
