Unusual large hailstones falling in the Cuban capital

A strong local severe storm that was formed at the end of this early morning in the Strait of Florida, advanced southward, and affected five municipalities of the capital city of Cuba, the Institute of Meteorology reported.

Havana, Cuba.- The all most unusual event for this part of the island was accompanied by the fall of large hail, shortly after five o’clock in the morning, in some localities such as Regla, Plaza, Centro Habana, and San Miguel del Padrón among other localities, the Forecasting Center of that entity said.

There were also strong electrical discharges, while the Casablanca weather station, in the municipality of Regla, reported gusts of strong winds from the north, with speeds between 55 and 60 kilometers per hour, and heavy rains of short duration.

Specialists from the Institute of Meteorology explained that this situation is due to an environment of strong atmospheric instability, generated in the Florida Strait, which was associated with a trough in the middle levels of the atmosphere over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico and strong winds in the high levels of the troposphere.

Several social media users shared comments and photos attesting to the size of the hail.

Despite the storm, Thursday dawned with little cloud cover in most of the country, although from the late morning, it will be partly cloudy, and will become cloudy in the afternoon, with some rains and thunderstorms occurring in the west and center and will be more numerous from Camagüey to Guantánamo.
