A dozen papers were presented at the Agroecology Workshop, an activity convened by the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP), on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the De Campesino a Campesino Agroecological Movement (From peasant to peasant).
Las Tunas, Cuba.- Representatives of all the municipalities, except “Amancio,” came to the headquarters of the Provincial Committee of Las Tunas, and presented their experiences regarding the work to achieve good production levels, in harmony with the soils and other natural resources.
In general, these investigations refer to the systematic practice of producers to promote agriculture and livestock, and the introduction of seeds that are more resistant to drought and the creation of multipurpose equipment, pulled by oxen, stand out.
According to Aimara Estévez Diéguez, an ANAP specialist, 4,759 farms started in Las Tunas, 1,287 are in transformation and 18 already hold the Agroecological Category. It is expected that another 21 will be declared soon, whose files are already being assessed by the organization's National Committee.
"To achieve this condition, the owners of the land -private or in usufruct- must demonstrate knowledge on the subject, family participation, compliance with production plans, and links with scientific centers or the University.
"The application of agroecological techniques such as animal traction, crop diversification, and rotation, pest and disease control with natural products, soil nutrition and conservation, and own seed production, among others," is also required.
For Armando Hernández Romero, an ANAP official who deals with science, technology, and agroecology, Las Tunas is one of the provinces at the forefront of the activity in the country, due to the incorporation of new producers, especially women and young people.
"This territory stands out because for 25 years it has established strong ties with the Cuban associations of Animal Production and Agricultural and Forestry Technicians, besides the University of Las Tunas and other related organizations.
"It is very important to generalize good practices to achieve a healthy diet, face climate change, and alleviate the lack of resources. Alternatives have been sought for the use of biological means to produce the people's food, which is the fundamental mission of the peasantry.”
