The member states of the Caribbean Community (Caricom) and Indian authorities held the fourth ministerial meeting in this capital, to strengthen cooperation ties in multiple areas, reported today the Caricom Today portal.

Georgetown.- The Caribbean community has benefited from its ties with India through the Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) Program, acknowledged the Jamaican Foreign Minister, Kamina Johnson-Smith, the main spokesperson at the opening of the meeting.

We build capacities in health, agriculture, disaster management, fisheries, information, and communication technology as well as diplomacy, she added.

She recognized India’s humanitarian spirit in the face of the impact of COVID-19 and its commitment shown by assuming the presidency of the G20 under the theme One Earth, One Family, One Future.

The member states of Caricom take your message and presidency as an excellent context within which to identify new areas of exchange based on democracy, sustainable development, and multilateralism, Johnson-Smith assured.

Among the job prospects she highlighted food security and various initiatives to counter climate change, two of the concerns of the Caribbean community on the global stage that require alliances with larger nations and economies such as India, she emphasized.

The also head of Foreign Trade thanked her counterpart from Guyana for hosting the fourth ministerial meeting that was held virtually and in person with the participation of the Secretary-General of Caricom, Carla Barnett, and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of India, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar. (PL)
