The El Cucalambé Honorary Chair, of the University of Las Tunas, greeted the arrival of a new edition of the Cucalambeana Fiesta with its gathering "Esta cárcel de aire puro," held at the Student Residence of the José (Pepito) Tey campus, belonging to the house of higher studies.
Las Tunas, Cuba.- Teachers and students of the Bachelor's Degree in Spanish - Literature, together with other lovers of literature, gathered to celebrate the 195th birthday of Juan Cristóbal Nápoles Fajardo (El Cucalambé), the greatest bucolic poet of the 19th century in Cuba, and to embrace traditions in general.
During the event, the group Total Teatro shared their much-loved Teatrova, a mix between trova and the art of the stage, which featured performances by Jesús Ricardo Pérez Cecilia, Iraida Williams, Juan Manuel Maestre, and Luis Andrés Till.
"We have to defend the Jornada Cucalambeana, we have to revitalize it. It is something beautiful that makes us feel Cuban", said Till, dressed in a sombrero and guayabera. A sentiment shared by those present, to whom he gave tenths, oral narrations, and a bit of history around the Guateque Mayor de Cuba, as Jesús Orta Ruiz (El Indio Naborí) described the Cucalambeana, held here for more than half a century.
Iraida and Jesús gave their art through songs like Sombras Amarillas (by Polito Ibáñez), Camila (by Jesús Ricardo Pérez Cecilia), and El Bichito Enamorado (by Iraida Williams).
Popular storytelling was well represented by the interpretations of Till and Juan Manuel, which transported the audience for a moment to the realm of stories of huts and the origins of our collective identity.
