From October 10 to 20, the Cuban Culture Day Event is celebrated, dedicated to the centennial of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, and the 95th birthday of intellectual Armando Hart Dávalos.
Las Tunas, Cuba.– The province has designed a comprehensive plan of activities during these days, which will also honor the legacy of musician Cristino Márquez Reyes, on the 85th anniversary of his birth, and the 21st anniversary of the José Martí Art Instructors Brigade (BJM).
The slogan "Culture is the Nation" characterizes the agenda, which includes the National History Congress, from October 13 to 15, with the participation of more than 100 delegates from different provinces, as announced at a press conference by Zenia Ross, head of Programs, Programming, and Communication Department of the Provincial Directorate of Culture.
The celebration is extended to the various municipalities of Las Tunas, with book presentations, panels, exhibitions, conferences, community activities, and other initiatives. In the city of Las Tunas, for example, the kickoff featured a special retreat in Antonio Maceo Park in honor of Cristino Márquez, who led the Provincial Concert Band for many years, achieving national prestige. Now, his son with the same name, along with the new generation of the group, paid tribute to him with the performance of melodies he helped to create, and pieces from the Cuban musical repertoire, in general.
Other notable activities will include workshops at the Balcón de Oriente to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the founding of the Advisory Council for the Development of Monumental and Environmental Sculpture (Codema). These workshops are expected to begin on October 20 and run through early November, according to Maida Rodríguez, president of the Provincial Council of Visual Arts (CPAP).
Likewise, the Cinemazul film appreciation festival will be part of the Cuban Culture Day, with the attendance of moderators from the provinces of Holguín and Granma. According to Yailín Hernández Velázquez, director of the Provincial Film Center, this event is intended to revive its national character starting with this 31st edition.
An exhibition of local visual artists, inspired by French films —one of the dedications of the event— will be part of Cinemazul, according to the director. In addition, "the program will conclude with a concert by the Las Tunas Symphony Orchestra, whose melodies will also be in tune with pieces from the world of cinema. The children's workshop "Los mil Elpidios" and the award ceremony for the My Favorite Cuban Cartoon contest, the viewing and analysis of works by Las Tunas filmmakers, various film debates, and outreach activities will be included in the event, which will take place from October 20 to 23," she added.
For her part, Anais Ray, head of the Provincial Center of Cultural Centers (CPCC), highlighted the significant events in the municipality of "Jesús Menéndez," such as the 4th Charles Ingram Festival of Children's Musical Creators in Memoriam and the Plaza Teatro performing arts event. Yisel Díaz, specialist in Communication from this institution, added that the José Martí Brigade will reach out to houses for children without parental care, maternity and nursing homes, among other spaces.
The Provincial Committee of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba (UNEAC), the Provincial Book Center, the El Cucalambé Ibero-American Décima House, and various provincial institutions are also participating in the event, which has planned options for different age groups and audience preferences.
