Las Tunas over fulfills blood donations and plasma delivery to the biopharmaceutical industry

The over fulfillment of blood donations and plasma delivery to the biopharmaceutical industry validate the response of the more than eight thousand inhabitants of Las Tunas, protagonists of one of the most altruistic acts of the human being, especially in the context of confrontation with the COVID-19.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- With these results, the province achieves that all the vital fluid that is transfused comes from its own territory and, at the same time, can provide service to other localities, said the microbiologist Ernesto Utra Álvarez, responsible for Quality Control at the Provincial Blood Bank, an institution that deserved the National Vanguard Status.

Until April, the contribution for the manufacture of blood products exceeded 1,200 liters of the necessary blood component; meanwhile, those in hyperimmune anti-D plasma reached 20.4 liters, an essential contribution of a small group of donors used in obtaining a vaccine for pregnant women with negative RH, to avoid the hemolytic disease of the newborn.

Likewise, during this period, the Balcony of Eastern Cuba delivered 1,406 units of leukocyte concentrate, which is used in the manufacture of the drug marketed under the name Herbertrans, a transfer factor that strengthens the human immune system, mainly for the elderly and infants, the specialist explained.

Likewise, the territory was incorporated into the contribution of hyperimmune plasma from patients recovered from COVID-19, boosted in Cuba in the care of patients with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus in serious and critical condition.

Other work horizons include cooperation with a project led by a team from the Ernesto Guevara Hospital, under which they take advantage of platelet-rich plasma in the Orthopedics, Dermatology, Ophthalmology and Plastic Surgery services for facial bio-stimulation, through which wrinkles and blemishes on the skin decrease, among other successes.

Furthermore, the use of regenerative medicine extends towards the benefits of Orthopedics and Angelology for the treatment of knee chondropathy, hip osteoarthritis and arterial-venous insufficiency, respectively.

In the context of the homage to the donors, from June 6 to 14 when the Blood Donor Day is celebrated, the effort to fulfill the nearly 18 thousand donations planned for the current year persists in Las Tunas: while there is no shortage of recognition to those who with their noble act become champions of life.
