"Protection of breastfeeding, shared responsibility."

The World Breastfeeding Week stimulates health programs in favor of the mother and the child. From the first to the 7th of August, an international call is heard: "Protection of breastfeeding, shared responsibility;" and it is, precisely, to emphasize that the well-being of both, the mother and the baby, is everyone's business.

“It is the responsibility of the father, not just the mother; also of the family, and the different Public Health scenarios that involve them, Dr. Maricelis Bas Ávalo, First Degree specialist in Neonatology, emphasizes.

And she adds, that in the midst of the complex health situation due to the COVID-19, their protection must be maximized. “They are helped and explained, in these cases, the importance of breastfeeding. It is the first gift that the mother gives to her child. Breast milk has many immunological properties, also rapport, because it is a link that is established between two beings for life. Breastfeeding protects the newborn against infections because it transmits antibodies," she pointed out.

“Breastfeeding is an act of nobility, of kindness from the mother to her child. Do not avoid it, rather strengthen it, with the help of the family and the whole social environment,” calls the neonatologist, who is also the director of the Breast Milk Bank of Dr. Ernesto Guevara de la Serna General Teaching Hospital.

This institution has 77 donors of this first food for the more than 600 newborns who benefited during 2021. More than two thousand patients have been assisted in Las Tunas since its creation.
