National Act for the Cuban Peasant Day in Jobabo, Las Tunas

The celebration of the 64th anniversary of the signing by Commander in Chief Fidel Castro of the First Agrarian Reform Law and the 62nd birthday of the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP) took place in the 30 de Diciembre Revolution Plaza, in the southern municipality of Jobabo.

Jobabo, Las Tunas.- It was an intense day due to feelings. Nearly five thousand people met, representing the peasantry of the province of Las Tunas, and celebrated a day full of the most genuine peasant expressions, such as music and dance.

With its typical scenery of rural areas and local artistic talent, the event showed what has been possible in the countryside, thanks to the priority given to this sector of the population, equal opportunities, and access to education and culture.

That is precisely what David Pérez Ramos, president of the Sabino Pupo agricultural production cooperative, from Manatí, referred to, who also expressed his pride in helping to guarantee the food that the population demands, especially when his unit bears the name of the peasant leader.

He said that the cooperative associates make the land produce creatively, promote animal husbandry, apply science and technological innovation, and encourage the search for solutions to increase production and substitute imports, despite existing economic limitations.

Elvira Moreno Verdecia, an associate with the Victoria de Girón credit and services cooperative (CCS), from Jobabo, expressed her feelings as a young woman with peasant roots, who was able to access Higher Education and finish a college degree.

She noted that, in rural areas, this generation of men and women has grown up in the face of difficulties, and highlighted the impact of women's work on the social tasks of the producing units, for the benefit of the residents of each community.

During the Act for the Cuban Peasant Day, Rafael Santiesteban Pozo, a member of the Council of State and president of ANAP, awarded the Outstanding Recognition to the provinces of Sancti Spíritus, Cienfuegos, and Santiago de Cuba. Especially, he distinguished Las Tunas for occupying first place in national emulation.

In his speech, Santiesteban Pozo recalled Niceto Pérez García, a humble farmer who was assassinated 77 years ago, and undisputed leader of the Cuban peasantry, and said that, in his honor, it is time to produce for the people and contribute to the sustainability of the just cause that saw the light in January 1959.

He congratulated the Cuban peasantry, the cadres, specialists, workers, and family members of all the provinces, municipalities, grassroots organizations, and cooperatives for the new anniversary of ANAP and extended the greeting to the outstanding territories.

He concluded that the men and women of the Cuban fields have motivations, such as the 65th anniversary of the meeting of Commander in Chief Fidel Castro with the peasants in Las Vegas de Jibacoa, on May 25, 1958, when they assured that they would make theirs the missions of the Homeland, just as it is now.

The members of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party Félix Duarte Ortega, a member of the Secretariat of the organization; and Manuel Pérez Gallego, the first secretary of the Cuban Communist Party in the province; and Jorge Luis Tapia Fonseca, vice prime minister. Governor Jaime Chiang Vega and the president of the ANAP Provincial Committee, Roberto Medrano Ledesma, were also present.
