Jaime Ernesto Chiang Vega and Ernesto Luis Cruz Reyes were elected this Sunday as Las Tunas governor and vice governor, respectively. Both had been proposed by the President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel and received more than half of the valid votes cast by the 665 district delegates who exercised their suffrage here.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Chiang Vega, elected with 92.16 percent of the votes, is a 56-year-old engineer who will serve for a second term as the head of the local Government. He made his working career in the telecommunications sector; and also has a master's degree in Marketing and Social Communication, diplomas in Public Administration, and National Security and Defense. In 2011 he was elected president of the Municipal Assembly of the People’s Power in Las Tunas. In 2018, he became the vice president of the then Provincial Assembly of the People's Power, and -that same year- its president. He is also a deputy to the National Assembly.

For his part, Cruz Reyes, 39 years old and elected with 96, 71 of the ballots counted, is a graduate in Accounting and Finance. He has an extensive service record in the economic branch of various companies in the territory. He worked as head of the Finance and Prices Directorate in the Balcón del Oriente Cubano. At the time of his election, he was the Coordinator of Programs and Objectives of the provincial government.

Election of governor and vice governor in Las Tunas

Following the provisions of the Constitution and the Electoral Law for this process, eight polling stations functioned here, one in each municipality; the voting acts were presided over by the president of the corresponding Municipal Electoral Council and deputies designated by the Council of State.

Next June, the Governor and Vice Governor elected this May 28 will take office for a five-year term.
