Urban, Suburban and Family Agriculture Program in Las Tunas

The Urban, Suburban, and Family Agriculture Program has the challenge of incorporating about 100 thousand hectares into production in 2024, distributed in the eight municipalities of Las province.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- To achieve this purpose, systematic work is planned in the areas destined for this activity, and the entry into the program of new actors with conditions for it at work and student centers, and in the communities.

The workers and administrations of each center, as well as the Committees for the Defense of the Revolution and the Federation of Cuban Women in the communities, must join the specialists in charge of materializing this commitment.

This plan is very significant due to the possibility of harvesting crops in short periods; so the beneficiaries must guarantee the direct attention that the plots need. Las Tunas has many limitations with irrigation systems but it is feasible to supply water with internal resources, in addition to the cultural attention to crops.

Regardless of the contributions from international programs such as Prodecor, More Food, and the Support Project for Agricultural Intercooperation (APOCOOP), the province continues to be one of the least benefited from hydraulic installations.

Besides, soils are classified between fair and bad and it is the territory where it rains the least in Cuba, with an average of 1,038 millimeters annually.
