Agricultural pole in the "Jesús Menéndez" municipality.

The "Jesús Menéndez" agricultural production pole covers some 2,016 hectares in the municipality of the same name in Las Tunas. Although not all of this land is currently under cultivation, a strategy is in place to incorporate all areas into food production.

Chaparra (Jesús Menéndez), Las Tunas.- Alexander Pérez García, delegate of the Ministry of Agriculture in the northern territory, pointed out that for this year, the work was divided into two stages. The first stage ended on July 26, and the second, on January 1, the anniversary of the Triumph of the Revolution. In addition, the first half of next year is included, as the province aspires to host the celebrations for National Rebellion Day in 2026.

"It is ongoing work because we are harvesting the areas, and we have to include them in the total balance to continue planting. Since March, when we defined this area as a pole, until the end of June, we have planted 574.2 hectares.

“That's not counting what we did in January and February in the northern part. Overall, since we started working here, we have covered 804.3 hectares and planted them with plantains, sweet potatoes, cassava, squash, other vegetables, and fruit trees.”

The Water Management Company is carrying out several actions to bring into full operation the 18.6 kilometers of the canal that brings water from the Juan Sáez dam to the cultivable areas.

Nine production units are located in this area; two belong to the Azcuba sugar group and the rest to the agricultural system. All of them have excellent soil and a long tradition of growing various crops.

The outstanding farmers in the area have reached the potential for food production in “Jesús Menéndez,” as they have spent years cultivating and harvesting plantain for the benefit of residents in the municipality and the provincial capital.

Along with the increase in their productive capacity, several rural roads, collective use entities, and some homes are being transformed in the visited area, which in the medium and long term will result in better living conditions for the inhabitants of communities such as El Trompo and Las Tapas.
