Extraordinary Plenary Session of the PCC Provincial Committe in Las Tunas

Consolidating at least one production pole per municipality is a current agreement of the Provincial Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) in Las Tunas. The topic was addressed at the most recent extraordinary plenary session of that body, in which other aspects of the agricultural sector were also analyzed.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Establishing these spaces, with 200 hectares or more, is a priority in the region. To date, the best example is the municipality of Jesús Menéndez, where 207 producers tend over 2,000 hectares, some 836 covered with various crops, primarily plantains.

At the meeting, the PCC's support for implementing the Food Sovereignty and Food and Nutritional Security Law was evaluated, thereby meeting the population's demands and achieving lower prices.

There is progress in the municipalities of Puerto Padre, Manatí, and Jobabo; however, more efforts are needed in Majibacoa, Colombia, and Amancio. In the provincial capital, although it cannot currently sustain itself, it is also imperative to find solutions.

During the First Secretaries' presentations, details of the actions being undertaken were revealed. For example, in Manatí, sugar cane fields are being transformed, buffalo farming is being increased, arable land is being expanded in the Turcios Lima hub, and the potential of the La Cristina area is being evaluated.

In Colombia, where rainfall has been scarce, 100 hectares have already been planted in the Leningrado agricultural production cooperative, and development areas are being promoted in the Las Mercedes pole, the only site in the municipality with available water in the surrounding area.

Jobabo could have better results in "Melanio Ortiz"; however, agricultural areas in Ramírez and Macagua are being strengthened, while in Puerto Padre, the Gayol pole remains planted, and work is underway in El Mijial, with a potential of 500 hectares.

At the meeting, elements were presented on other issues that impede achieving better results, such as the insufficient convergence of production methods at agricultural fairs, non-payments to producers, and difficulties in ensuring biological resources, essential for pest control.

The notable decline in cattle herds due to feeding and water supply problems was also mentioned, in addition to criminal acts against large cattle, which are decreasing but are evidence of poor herd management by owners.

Other difficulties include empty flowerbeds in orchards and organic farms, cooperatives without areas for collective use, problems in contracting production, and the lack of control and enforcement by those responsible, who are criticized for their insufficient ties to the grassroots.

The first secretary of the Provincial Committee, Osbel Lorenzo Rodríguez, stated that is required to change thinking and actions, and make better use of material resources, promote intercropping, and guarantee animal protein through the raising of chickens, rabbits, goats, and sheep.

He added that the Collection Company must strengthen its management and that the agrarian commission is responsible for improving land control. He emphasized that, as a whole, the province can transform production and marketing, which is needed in these times.
