Cuba took the bronze medal in the modality of recurve bow

Archer Juan José Santiesteban today won the fifth medal of the Las Tunas delegation at the San Salvador 2023 Central American and Caribbean Games, after winning the team bronze medal in the recurve bow modality, belonging to the archery tournament.

Santiesteban, Hugo Franco, and Javier Vega defeated Venezuela 6-0 in the dispute for third place, after losing equally to the Colombian squad in the semifinals. In their quarterfinal match, those from the Greater of the Antilles had beaten El Salvador 6-0.

Santiesteban's bronze brings to five the number of medals for athletes from Las Tunas in the Games. Previously, the pitcher Carlos Juan Viera had won silver in the baseball tournament, after the rain prevented the celebration of the final, and the regulations of the competition granted the first place to the Mexican team.

The rest of the podiums fell to the pentathletes Marcos Antonio Rojas and Diana Leyva. At the Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic sub-site, Rojas won the silver medal in the relay last Wednesday, accompanied by Léster Ders; while in the female branch, Diana Leyva and Delmis Pérez took the bronze medals.

In addition, Cuba had won two third places, through Léster Ders in the individual competition and Leyva herself, accompanied by Juan Pablo Velázquez, in the mixed relay.

Yoandys Lescay will look for the first gold for the Balcón de Oriente when the mixed 4x400 relay is run at the close of the second day of athletics.

Another option lies with the softball player Rosángela Jardines, undefeated with the Cuban squad in a fight in which the current champion, Puerto Rico, and the team from Mexico, with Olympic experience, come out as favorites.

Lastly, field hockey teams defend their crowns with athletes from Las Tunas on their rosters.
