Farmers contribution to the economy and feeding of the people is essential

60 years after the establishment of the National Association of Small Farmers (ANAP), this May 17 it is evident that its contribution to the economy and feeding of the people in these difficult times has become more than strategic, essential.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- Despite the climatic effects, the ravages of the economic blockade, and the situation caused by the pandemic, the peasants of Las Tunas maintain their leadership when it comes to food production.

The 62nd anniversary of the signing of the First Agrarian Reform Law is the occasion to recognize the work of men and women facing the furrow. Roberto Medrano Ledezma, president of the ANAP in Las Tunas, highlighted to 26 the response of the organization in the confrontation with the COVID-19, and the collection of all possible productions for the State to market with more organization and reach each destination.

Roberto Medrano In these endeavors, they have not only guaranteed the state commission, but also "stands out the gesture of delivering various food donations to health institutions, isolation centers, and industries, which have not stopped to support the health sector and the economy", Medrano Ledezma referred.

The municipalities of Jesús Menéndez, Puerto Padre, Jobabo, and Amancio stand out due to the results in the latest calendar. For its part, the capital city received recognition approved by the Provincial Bureau.

“In the context of May 17, he said, we have delivered the Seal “60th Anniversary of the ANAP Foundation” to numerous affiliates, founders and former leaders of the organization; and other decorations such as the Romárico Cordero Medal, the José Ramírez Seal, and the Antero Regalado Distinction.”

Likewise, three cooperatives were recognized with the National Vanguard Condition: those of agricultural production (CPA) Frank País, from the municipality of Majibacoa, and Calixto Sarduy, from Las Tunas; besides the Carlos Manuel de Céspedes credit and services cooperative (CCS), also located in the provincial capital. This award is also held by several peasants with significant contributions during the past year.

Medrano Ledezma explained that the production indicators “are all met, except for the pig program. However, livestock farmers are determined to find alternatives to guarantee animal feeding, a fundamental cause of non-compliance.”

The guidelines for agricultural development in Las Tunas are designed. The use of biological means, microorganisms, and animal traction in crops are urgent. The cultivation of every piece of land is more important today than ever.

With the sweat that bathes the faces of those who work the plots, this sector has been the mainstay of the production of grains, viands, proteins, fruits, and vegetables in the territory. In the celebration of this anniversary, the decision to plant and produce more and to take better advantage of the potentialities and reserves, for the satisfaction of the people, stands out.
