State-owned oil company Petróleos de Venezuela (PDVSA) is assessing on Wednesday some measures to respond to the U.S. embargo sanctions on its American subsidiary Citgo Petroleum Corporation, after recent announcements by the U.S. Department of the Treasury.

Caracas.- "PDVSA will respond to the U.S. claims to steal Venezuelan crude, following unilateral and illegal measures against the entity on U.S. soil," Oil Minister Manuel Quevedo said on Tuesday.

After a meeting with deputy ministers and the executive committee of the state corporation, Quevedo stressed that authorities are carrying out the internal analysis to protect Venezuela's resources.

The national opposition cannot be allowed to steal the resources resulting from the sale of oil for its conspiratorial purposes, he stressed.

Quevedo announced that the response will be aimed at protecting Venezuela's interests as well as those of the partners and suppliers of the company, causing the least impact on the hydrocarbons market.

Citgo is operational and while it is so, PDVSA will not allow its resources to be stolen, the minister said in response to the Tuesday announcement of new sanctions by the U.S. Department of the Treasury to seize the Venezuelan subsidiary.

The measures recognize as authority the parallel government led by opposition legislator Juan Guaidó, self-proclaimed on January 23 as an "interim president" of Venezuela. (PL)
