Las Tunas Provincial Center for Hygiene and Epidemiology

The health authorities of Las Tunas are on alert due to the detection of cases of people experiencing fever, vomiting, diarrhea, and muscular discomfort. These symptoms coincide with epidemiological challenges present in all eight municipalities.

Las Tunas, Cuba.- At a press conference, it was specified that no cases of Oropouche fever have yet been reported; an infection with symptoms similar to dengue, zika, and chikungunya, recently spread in Latin American countries.

Dr. Aldo Cortés, vice director of Hygiene and Epidemiology in the province, mentioned that no disease cases have been identified in the territory. However, they are waiting for the results of samples sent to the Pedro Kourí Tropical Medicine Institute (IPK).

The existence of solid waste in some areas of Las Tunas, the importance of self-focusing, and the elimination of potential mosquito breeding sites are alerted before the current situation.

The expert said that this year 11 patients with COVID-19 have been detected while, in June, there were 15 suspected cases of leptospirosis.

As for respiratory diseases, although the number of cases has been lower than expected, 70 people have been affected, 40 adults and 30 children.

Addressing the situation of acute diarrheal diseases (ADDs), Dr. Katiuska Hidalgo Fuentes explained that the figure of 2,732 cases detected this year, with seven serious patients, is above that of 2023, which is why she called for urgent measures to be taken in the current period of hot months.

She said that poor hygiene in food handling, water contamination, and solid waste -that attract vectors- contribute to the appearance and spread of the disease.
