Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are conditions or disorders in which the heart develops abnormally, usually before birth. Many babies who suffer from it die.

Babies who have this disorder need surgery and subsequent treatment at a very young age. As a result, many survive and reach adulthood without problems.

Although the cause of its appearance is generally unknown, there are determining factors that this pathology appears, such as an infection contracted by the mother during childbirth and diabetes.

Also on the list are contact with drugs, alcohol, or any harmful substances during pregnancy, and hereditary factors or genetic diseases such as Down syndrome.

Thanks to technological breakthroughs, many pathologies can be controlled in time, as is the case with most congenital heart diseases, which, if diagnosed and treated early, can even save the patient’s life. (PL)
